Course

The 50k and 25k courses both climax with their climbs up and over Mt Spokane. Both races also feature a fun mix of single track and abandoned dirt roads which now function as wide trails and just as much downhill as uphill thanks to the loop formatted course.  The 25k loop is also the core of the 50k course which adds two smaller loops(one up and over Quartz Mountain and the other up and over Day Moauntain and Mount Kit Carson) to get the additional distance needed.

The 25k course starts with a short loop on the nordic trails before dropping down a long gradual descent to the low point in the race(about 3200ft) and then begins it's sometimes steep, sometimes gradual ascent of the mountain.  From the top of Mt Spokane there are views to Idaho, Montana and British Columbia as well as the Spokane and Columbia River Valleys in Washington. The course follows a rough and rocky dirt road (that at times is very steep and rugged while at other times smooth and fast) through the alpine ski area first along the ridge and then contouring down and back towards the start/finish area.

The 50k starts on the nordic trails, following the 25k course for the first couple miles and then where the 25k turns back towards the start/finish area the 50k continues further in the mostly rolling hills of the nordic area and climbs to the top of Quartz Mountain. After dropping down the back side of Quartz the route turns back towards the start/finish area and rejoins the 25k course for the long gradual downhill to the low point and about half of the climb up Mt Spokane before again leaving the 25k route.  At the Burping Brook Aid Station(roughly the halfway point in the race) the 50k runners again diverge and do their 2nd "bonus" loop of about 7-8 miles this time on the very flat and fast Kit Carson Loop Rd and then on the sweet and scenic trails that go up, across and down Day Mountain and Mount Kit Carson which eventually bring the runners back to the Burping Brook Aid Station. Leaving the aid station the 2nd time the 50k course rejoins with the 25k course for the remainder of the run and continues the ascent up the final climb of the race, Mt Spokane.
