Both races summit Mt Spokane and feature a fun mix of single track and old dirt roads which now function as wide trails and just as much downhill as uphill thanks to the loop formatted course. The 50k is basically two loops of the 25k course. For the full Rainshadow Running calendar, check www.rainshadowrunning.com
The 25k loop starts with a long gradual downhill to the low point of the course on nice single track then then climb up, sometimes steeply, to the relatively flat and fast Kit Carson Loop Rd. On the loop road the runners wrap their way around to the NW side of the mountain where they make the side trip up on the sweet and scenic trails that go up, across and down Day Mountain and Mount Kit Carson. After Mt Kit Carson the runners continue the ascent up the final climb of the race, Mt Spokane. Once on the summit of the mountain the course follows the spine of the ridge NE with big vistas through the upper part of the ski area. Following rough and steep service roads through the ski are the runners are sent back towards the Start/Finish at the Selkirk Nordic Ski Lodge via the 130 trail.
